Malachi Smith

MALACHI SMITH has become an icon in the world of reggae/ performance/ dub-poetry. Performing from an early age, his first three poems were written for the White Marl Beacon magazine, while still attending White Marl Primary School in Jamaica.

He is an alumnus of Florida International University and The Jamaica School of Drama. He was one of the founding members of Poets In Unity, a critically acclaimed ensemble that brought dub-poetry to the forefront of reggae music in the late 70s and carried it forward for a decade. Malachi has also performed as an actor and poet, and is an accomplished writer, publishing and performing his own plays and poetry. He has also become known for his performances in other theatrical productions and on radio, television, and live theatre.

Malachi is currently a graduate student at Florida International University. He is also a fellow of the University of Miami’s Mitchner Caribbean Writer’s Institute.

As a winner of many awards, medals, prizes, commendations and certificates, Malachi's list goes on and on. Malachi's most recent awards include:

  • 2006 Winner Dub poet of the year, Joe Higgs Music Awards
  • 2006 Nominee Dub poet of the year, ReggaeSoca Awards
  • 2006 Nominee Poet of the year, Martin’s International Music Awards
  • 2006 Won four awards Jamaica Cultural Development Commission Annual Literary Awards for poetry and playwriting
  • 2007 World premier of documentary film: DUB POETRY: the life & work of Malachi Smith
  • 2007 Nominee for Dub poet of the year, International Reggae Music Awards to be held at the Apollo Theatre in New York.

Malachi's prior awards include the international “Dub-poet of the year,” 2003 ReggaeSoca Awards and 2004, Martins International Music Awards, Special Community Service Award, which Malachi shared with Wyclef Jean, Beenie Man and Sean Paul.

He was a featured performer in Baltimore at that city's Black History Month tribute to Bob Marley, and he appeared again in Baltimore at The Street Fair Café. Malachi also appeared at Cultrama 2003 in Tampa, Miami, and Coral Springs. Malachi toured Nevis and St. Kitts in the summer of 2000 to rave reviews. Last year he performed at Florida International University and at several Miami-Dade County Public schools as part of their Black History Month celebrations. He also appeared at the launching of the Amistad project and the opening reception for the Jamaican art Exhibition at the Broward County Library.

Malachi recently released "Honey" and "I Still Care" on the 7 Beards Label. He has also just finished a documentary that was shot in Jamaica, New York, Toronto and Jamaica. The documentary was released in 2006. Malachi is currently in the studios working on his fourth album with son Marlon Smith and renowned musician and arranger Eugene Gray.
